On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic, a British passenger liner on her maiden voyage, sank into the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg. At the time, she was the largest, grandest ship on the oceans, and thought to be “unsinkable.” On board when she sank were 2,224 passengers and crew–over 1,500 of whom died during the catastrophe, one of the deadliest in modern maritime history.
